UIPM 2019 Global Laser Run City Tour: Kiev (UKR) finds recipe for fun in the sun

Some countries are in the first year of their journey with the UIPM’s fastest-growing development competition. Many others are in year two and building on their progress.

Many nations are into year three of participation in the Global Laser Run City Tour and refining the art of hosting with impressive results – and one of them is Ukraine.

On May 18, the capital city, Kiev, staged a hugely successful and sun-blessed GLRCT which attracted 405 athletes and more than 1,000 visitors to the Dynamo equestrian centre in the Holosievskyy district.

Participants came from eight regions in Ukraine and also from neighbouring Latvia, and they travelled to Kiev with parents, team-mates and friends.

Entertainment and barbecue food were provided and the judging of the competition was exemplary, with all technical officials qualified to judge at national level in Pentathlon.

Igor Panin, President of the Ukrainian Modern Pentathlon Federation, said: “Because of UIPM’s great support, for the third year in a row the Ukrainian Modern Pentathlon Federation received additional opportunities to develop Modern Pentathlon in our country.

“The Laser-Run format gave us a very strong impulse to attract more and more people to our sport. As a result, many young athletes are doing Pentathlon in Ukraine today.

“I am thankful to all participants and coaches, to the local organising committee and to UIPM for supporting this event with positive emotions.”

President Panin himself took part, along with other VIPs across the public and commercial sectors and their families.

The GLRCT was created to provide an entry point to UIPM Sports for people of all ages in urban communities around the world.

Another 100 cities have been selected in 2019 as hosts of the GLRCT or the Biathle/Triathle National Tour. The full calendar can be viewed at the UIPM website, where you can also find more information on UIPM’s various multi-discipline sports.

In September, the UIPM Laser Run World Championships will be incorporated into the Pentathlon World Championships for the first time in Budapest (HUN), where Laser Run is also on the programme for the 1st World Urban Games.

In December, Laser Run and Triathle will both feature for the first time in the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Philippines.
