Highest honour in Egyptian sport for six stars of Senior World Championships
Six modern pentathletes from Egypt have been honoured for their achievements in 2017 by the Egyptian President of State, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
A ceremony of celebration took place at the presidential palace in Heliopolis and included 42 athletes from 11 different sports who had performed with distinction in 2017.
The six pentathletes honoured were Yasser Hefny, Islam Hamed, Ahmed Ashraf, Haidy Adel, Sondos Tarek and Mariam Amer, all of whom won gold or silver medals during the 2017 Senior World Championships in Cairo (EGY).
They all received the highest award in Egyptian sport, the Medal of Honor in Sport from the 1st degree, and the honour was extended to Sharif Elerian, President of the Egyptian Modern Pentathlon Federation, and head coach to the senior team, Raouf Hossam.
The other sports represented at the ceremony were weightlifting, judo, wrestling, fencing, swimming, taekwondo, squash, karate, kung fu and two Paralympic sports, weightlifting and swimming.
The city of Cairo (EGY) will once again play host to top-class Modern Pentathlon when it stages the first round of the 2018 UIPM Pentathlon World Cup, starting on February 28.
