CISM World Military Championships: Batuleviciute (LTU) wins gold

Modern Pentathlon

Lina Batuleviciute of Lithuania beat a world-class field to become gold medallist in the Women's Final at the 45th CISM World Military Championships in Drzonkow (POL).

Batuleviciute (LTU) was a consistent performer all day and held off the challenge of silver medallist Ekaterina Khuraskina (RUS), who had been top scorer in Fencing, and bronze medallist Sarolta Kovacs (HUN).

There was a setback for the home crowd when 2016 Olympic bronze medallist Oktawia Nowacka (POL) withdrew following Fencing. Some consolation was provided by Anna Maliszewska (POL), who was just short of the podium in 4th.

Batuleviciute (LTU) demonstrated great consistency to achieve 3rd place in Fencing before a perfect score of 300 in Riding sent her into the Laser-Run with a great chance of catching Kovacs (HUN), who started with a 13sec lead.

The suspense continued throughout the run/shoot as Batuleviciute (LTU) and Khuraskina (RUS) overtook the 2016 world champion Kovacs (HUN) and engaged in a private battle that Batuleviciute (LTU) finally won by only 6sec.

Khuraskina helped Russia to retain their 2016 team gold medal alongside Sofia Serkina and Svetlana Lebedeva.

The 45th CISM World Military Championships continue on September 15 with the Men's Final before concluding with the Mixed Relay on September 16.
