UIPM News
  • Pentathlon part of urban hub with 3x3 Basketball, BMX and Skateboarding
  • Sepulveda Basin recreation venue set to attract fans of all ages
  • President Stull anticipates “a stunning vision of the urban future of the Olympic Games”

The new-look Modern Pentathlon will form part of a vibrant urban sports hub during the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, it was confirmed today.

Bringing Obstacle racing to the Olympics for the first time, Pentathlon is destined to attract tens of thousands of spectators of all ages to Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area – Los Angeles’ second-biggest urban park.

Sepulveda will also host 3x3 Basketball, BMX and Skateboarding, and Pentathlon’s inclusion in this cluster follows the repositioning of the sport as a fast-paced, viewer-friendly race that is accessible and appealing to athletes and fans from all backgrounds worldwide.

Modern Pentathlon has been part of the programme of every Summer Olympics since Stockholm in 1912, and Paris 2024 was the last edition to feature Riding. The equestrian discipline has now been replaced by Obstacle racing at all levels, and the first senior competition – UIPM 2025 Pentathlon World Cup Cairo – saw an immediate uplift in UIPM’s social media profile, highlighting the Federation’s commitment to attracting new and younger audiences.

UIPM President Rob Stull OLY said: “Los Angeles is home to a vibrant urban youth sports scene and we are very excited that Modern Pentathlon will be at the beating heart of this when the Olympic Games returns to the City of Angels.

“Young fans at the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area will see a stunning vision of the urban future of the Olympic Games. Together with LA28 and three other cutting-edge sports, we are going to provide an innovative and very cool experience for young fans and their families watching in the park in Sepulveda and around the world.

“Hosting our sport alongside other fast-paced, urban sports in the entertainment capital of the world will leave an incredible legacy for Pentathlon in the US and globally. I can’t think of a better place for our Ninja-style Obstacle race to make its Olympic debut.”
