Moustaches worn with pride as global community celebrates Pentathlon Day

UIPM Family

The global Modern Pentathlon community combined heritage, humour and a glimpse of the sport’s future as athletes, coaches and National Federations celebrated Pierre de Coubertin Pentathlon Day 2026.

Building on the success of last year’s celebrations, the now-familiar Coubertin moustache returned across UIPM’s social media channels, while a new edition of the Pentathlon Day Challenge tested participants’ knowledge of Pentathlon and the growing presence of Obstacle Sports within the movement.

Together, the two activations reflected the spirit of Pentathlon Day: celebrating the origins of the sport created by its founder while introducing his legacy to a new generation in a fresh and engaging way.

Moustaches reach millions

The moustache campaign returned after proving one of the most popular elements of Pentathlon Day in 2025, this time with athletes and National Federations encouraged to become even more creative.

UIPM published a Pentathlon Day banner and three original reels, while athletes and National Federations contributed 33 pieces of creative content from around the world.

Together, Pentathlon Day content generated more than three million views across social media, with Instagram accounting for 3.1 million views and more than 4,300 engagements. Sixteen Instagram Stories attracted an average audience of 2,700 views, while further collaborative posts came from National Federations including Lithuania and Guatemala.

Facebook added more than 25,000 views and TikTok almost 5,000 as the distinctive moustache became a playful way of starting conversations about Coubertin and the history of Modern Pentathlon.

For 14-year-old Klim Gnedtchik of Belarus, U15 World Championships silver medallist and U15 European Champion, the campaign helped turn a fun activity into an introduction to the sport’s origins.

He said: “During the World Championships in Madrid we made a lot of videos and photos with moustaches. At first, we didn’t really understand why there were so many moustaches everywhere!

“Then our coaches explained that it was for Pentathlon Day and told us more about Pierre de Coubertin: that he was not only behind the modern Olympic Games, but also created Modern Pentathlon. Athletes started explaining it to each other too.

“But the best part was that it was fun. We laughed, talked to athletes from other countries and made a lot of group photos together.”

Among the most imaginative contributions came from Georgia, where coach David Magrakvelidze and his young athletes produced a reel following ‘Coubertin’ through the full Pentathlon journey.

He said: “Together with my young athletes, we embraced the spirit of Pierre de Coubertin in our own creative way. From fencing to the final run, our moustaches came along for the pentathlete journey, bringing plenty of laughter to every challenge.

“It was a fantastic team experience, full of smiles, creativity and unforgettable moments. Because sport is about more than medals and results — it’s also about friendship, having fun and sharing our passion with the next generation.”

Magdalena Quintanilla, President of the Guatemala Modern Pentathlon Association and the NORCECA Confederation, said the celebrations captured the values behind Pentathlon Day.

She said: “Celebrating Modern Pentathlon Day with our athletes and coaches was so much fun. The moustache videos were definitely among the funniest moments: we laughed, enjoyed being together and celebrated the friendship that makes our sport special.

“Coubertin’s message reminds us that sport is about much more than winning: it is about effort, perseverance, respect, friendship and enjoying the journey.

“I am proud to celebrate our athletes and the Olympic spirit that brings us together. Happy Pentathlon Day — let’s keep enjoying, growing and inspiring through sport.”

Coubertin’s family also joined the campaign, with descendant Alexandra de Navacelle de Coubertin contributing her own moustache image.

She said: “I was very happy to contribute to this year’s Pentathlon Day with my ‘moustache’ and even happier to see how much creative content was produced by athletes, coaches, National Federations and pentathlon lovers around the world.

“It is wonderful to see Coubertin’s legacy presented in such a fresh and engaging way. For next year, I believe we should introduce some prizes to encourage even more creativity and perhaps help the campaign go viral.”

Challenge connects past and future

Learning was another important element of the 2026 celebrations through the latest edition of the Pentathlon Day Challenge.

Around 50 participants tackled a demanding 20-question quiz, with this year’s challenge placing particular emphasis on the integration of Obstacle Racing into Modern Pentathlon, leading Obstacle athletes, competition rules and the Olympic values represented by the new Pentathlon format.

The challenge had a dual purpose: helping established pentathletes learn more about Obstacle Racing while enabling athletes from the Obstacle community to become more familiar with Modern Pentathlon and its heritage.

Correct answers and response speed both contributed to the final standings, with Marco D’Amata, Ahmed Hamed and Lea Frugier sharing the highest score of 798 points.

Tokyo 2020 Olympian Ahmed Hamed of Egypt, now working as a coach, said: “As a former Olympic pentathlete and now a coach, I think this type of quiz is useful because our sport is changing.

“Athletes and coaches need to understand not only the new challenge, but also how Obstacle fits into the identity and values of Modern Pentathlon. Learning through a challenge like this makes it more interesting and memorable.”

With millions reached online and communities around the world joining the celebrations, the 2026 edition once again demonstrated how Pierre de Coubertin Pentathlon Day can connect the sport’s history with its continuing evolution — remembering where Pentathlon came from while introducing that story to the generations shaping where it goes next.
