UIPM 2024 Pentathlon World Cup Final: Oteiza (FRA) takes chunky lead into Women’s Final

Modern Pentathlon
  • Paris 2024 hopeful sets standard in Fencing with Clouvel (FRA) 15 points behind
  • Langrehr (GER), Abdelmaksoud (EGY) and Venckauskaite (LTU) also in strong positions
  • Final will feature individual 2024 winners Gulyas (HUN), Bryson (GBR), Gnedtchik (AIN) and Guzi (HUN)

For the second year in succession, Marie Oteiza of France goes into the Women’s Final at the UIPM 2024 Pentathlon World Cup Final in pole position, with compatriot Elodie Clouvel (FRA) immediately beneath her on the leaderboard.

The two Paris 2024 host-nation hopefuls finished comfortably in Semi-final B, but it was Oteiza (FRA) who had already stood out in the Fencing Ranking Round with 25 victories and only 10 defeats. This means she will begin the Women’s Final on Super Saturday (May 25) 15 points ahead of her team-mate Clouvel (FRA).

Last year, Oteiza (FRA) went on to win bronze in the Final while Clouvel (FRA) slipped to 11th.

A further 10 points behind, three athletes will share 3rd position – Rebecca Langrehr of Germany, Salma Abdelmaksoud of Egypt and Gintare Venckauskaite of Lithuania – after scoring 20V/15D. The top fencer was actually Unju Kim of Korea with a remarkable 27V/8D, but her elimination in Riding brought her campaign to an end.

Abdelmaksoud (EGY) was first home in Semi-final A, joined by Mariya Gnedtchik (AIN), with Alice Sotero of Italy and Michelle Gulyas of Hungary only a few strides behind. Jessica Varley (GBR) was the big mover into the top nine and Laura Asadauskaite (LTU) used all her tenacity and stamina to deny Sunwoo Kim (KOR) the last qualification place.

The first finishers in Semi-final B were Venckauskaite (LTU), Blanka Guzi (HUN) and home favourite Ilke Ozyuksel of Türkiye, with Oteiza (FRA) cruising home 4sec further back.

A strong Laser Run from Kerenza Bryson (GBR) enabled her to climb into the top 10 and ensure that all four individual winners from the 2024 regular season – Gulyas (HUN), Bryson (GBR), Gnedtchik (AIN) and Guzi (HUN) – will line up in the Pentathlon World Cup Final.
