UIPM pays tribute to Vice-President Dongkook Chung (1961-2026)

MONACO: March 22, 2026 – UIPM President Rob Stull has led the tributes to Vice-President Dongkook Chung, who died peacefully at home this morning. He was 64.

Dongkook Chung was a Korea national team athlete in Fencing from 1980-1982 who went on to coach the national Modern Pentathlon team from 1985 to 1989. He served as Secretary General for the Korea Modern Pentathlon Federation from 1999-2021.

Becoming one of Modern Pentathlon’s most recognised international officials, Mr Chung was a member of the UIPM Technical Committee from 2005 to 2024. During his term, he was also appointed as Technical Delegate for the London 2012 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

A Director of Korea Sports & Olympic Committee (KSOC) and Vice Chief of its Jincheon National Training Centre, Dongkook was elected to serve as UIPM Vice-President at UIPM 2024 Congress in Riyadh (KSA).

He was known throughout the UIPM community as a gentleman, an intelligent contributor to the development of the sport and a highly committed volunteer.

President Stull commented: “I am shocked and deeply saddened by this terrible news and all my thoughts are with Dongkook’s wife and family.

“He was a legend in our sport and in life. Indeed, his legacy will live on – it is timeless. A great man and a dear friend to all. We will memorialize and celebrate the life of Dongkook Chung properly in the days to come. 

“My heart goes out to his family and friends at this difficult time and I offer the deepest condolences of our UIPM family to all – he touched so many lives. 

“We have lost a kind, generous, thoughtful and dedicated leader. He will be missed and he will also live on in so many ways.”
