World Military Games 2019: Lifanov leads Russia to glory

Modern Pentathlon

Alexander Lifanov of Russia led Russia to double gold on the penultimate day of the World Military Games Modern Pentathlon in Wuhan (CHN).

Lifanov (RUS) won a closely-contested Men’s Final and led his country to team gold with the help of Ilia Shugarov (6th) and Ilia Frolov (24th).

Lee Jihun of Korea claimed the silver medal, finishing only 4sec behind the champion, with bronze medallist Kirill Kasyanik of Belarus a further 11sec adrift.

That meant there was no medal for world No.3 Marvin Dogue of Germany, who finished 4th, ahead of Christopher Patte of France in 5th.

Korea took home the team silver thanks to the combined efforts of Lee Jihun, Lee Donggi (13th) and Park Sanggu (18th), while bronze went to Poland courtesy of Szymon Staskiewicz (9th), Lukasz Gutkoswki (14th) and Sebastian Stasiak (17th).

Kasyanik (BLR) and Lifanov (RUS) were the best performers in Fencing, each scoring 24V/11D with Kasyanik (BLR) winning the final bout in the Bonus Round. Lee Jihun (KOR) kept in touch

China dominated in Swimming as Han Jiahao (CHN) timed 2:01.83 with Li Changheng (CHN) not far behind in 2:02.18.

Kasyanik (BLR) and Lifanov (RUS) each scored 293 in Riding, but Lee Jihun (KOR) enjoyed a clean round and that enabled him to take the overall lead.

Lifanov (RUS) started the Laser Run with a 6sec handicap but he overtook both Kasyanik (BLR) and Lee (KOR) to claim the glory.

Modern Pentathlon is one of 31 sports on the programme in Wuhan (CHN), where the official slogan is ‘Military Glory / World Peace’, and the Pentathlon competition concludes with the Mixed Relay on Saturday, October 26.

The competition is overseen by CISM Modern Pentathlon and its President, Col Nilton Rolim, and the UIPM Technical Delegate Dmitrii Menshikov, with UIPM President Dr Klaus Schormann also in attendance.

Referees, judges and volunteers are provided by the Chinese Modern Pentathlon Association, which is preparing for a big year in 2020 as Xiamen (CHN) hosts the UIPM World Pentathlon and Laser Run World Championships in May and the UIPM Congress in November.
