  • Choong (GBR), Jun (KOR), Marosi (HUN) and Prades (FRA) set for clash of titans
  • Clouvel (FRA) aiming to rein in Gulyas (HUN) and Micheli (ITA)
  • World’s top 72 athletes destined for showdown in Ankara (TUR)

The Olympic champion, world record-holder, world champion and reigning champion are among 36 male athletes destined for a clash of titans at the UIPM 2022 Pentathlon World Cup Final in Ankara (TUR).

The final list of 72 participants has now been published and a particularly mouth-watering contest awaits in the men’s event.

World No.1 and Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medallist Joseph Choong of Great Britain will again face world No.2 Woongtae Jun of Korea, who set a new overall world record in Albena (BUL) in May, as well as 2021 world champion and world No.8 Adam Marosi of Hungary – not to mention his young team-mate Csaba Bohm (HUN), now ranked No.3.

Adding further stardust to the line-up will be reigning champion Valentin Prades of France, who won this title for the third time in 2021, and two-time world champion Valentin Belaud (FRA). The French team – aiming for glory on home soil in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games – also contains Christopher Patte (FRA) and, on the women’s side, Elodie Clouvel (FRA) – both ranked No.4.

While Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallist Clouvel (FRA) brings experience to the line-up, she will face stiff opposition from the gold medallists of the 2022 regular season, top-ranked Michelle Gulyas (HUN), Elena Micheli of Italy (5), Ieva Serapinaite of Lithuania (3) and Jessica Varley (GBR, 7).

Other prominent qualifiers on the list are Ilke Ozyuksel of host nation Turkey (2), Salma Abdelmaksoud of Egypt (6) and Blanka Guzi (HUN, 10).

The competition, taking place from June 22-26, will be followed immediately by a two-day Test Event of Obstacle Discipline, which has been selected for testing as a potential replacement for Riding as the New 5th Discipline in Modern Pentathlon after Paris 2024.
