The Union international de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) has announced the 72 athletes who will compete at the UIPM 2022 Pentathlon World Cup Final in Ankara (TUR) next week.
The 36 female and 36 male qualifiers were named the day after the conclusion of the Pentathlon World Cup regular season, which saw medals won by athletes from 11 countries across four continents.
Each country has a maximum of six athletes (three female and three male) in the Final, with host nation Turkey permitted four athletes (two female and two male). Three nations achieved the maximum quota – Hungary, Italy and Mexico.
A list of reserves has been drawn up in case of withdrawals – and vacant places will go to the next eligible athlete on the list regardless of nationality.
Twelve nations have also been named for the Mixed Relay, based on their performances in the regular season – the list is topped by Egypt, who won two gold medals and one bronze.
UIPM President Dr Klaus Schormann said: “This season we have seen exactly why pentathletes are regarded as the most versatile athletes in the world. They have adapted superbly to the new Modern Pentathlon format designed for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with Finals comprising all five disciplines in 90 minutes.
“I congratulate all 72 athletes who have qualified for the UIPM 2022 Pentathlon World Cup Final through hard work and commitment, with special praise for the teams who achieved multiple selections for the individual events and also the Mixed Relay.”
