UIPM 2026 Pentathlon World Cup Cairo: Jurts (SUI) shine in Women's Qualification

Modern Pentathlon

The 2026 season got off to a captivating start in Egypt’s historic capital as the Women’s Qualification kicked the UIPM 2026 Pentathlon World Cup Cairo into instant high gear.

There was a little slice of history and a lot of joy for the Jurt family as Switzerland’s impressive sisters led the way on numerous fronts. World No.14 and Paris 2024 Olympian Anna Jurt (SUI) topped the list of qualifiers, winning Heat B with 1,415 points, as 36 athletes in total made it safely through to the Semi-finals.

Anna’s younger siblings shared the limelight as the twin combo of Florina Jurt (SUI) and Katharina Jurt (SUI) also progressed. In the process, Florina set a new world record in the Obstacle discipline with a blistering time of 27.68sec.

Comfortably among the leading qualifiers was reigning Olympic champion Michelle Gulyas of Hungary, who adapted smoothly to the new format (reduced Swimming distance and extra shooting in Laser Run). Gulyas (HUN) will be joined in the Semi-finals by three team-mates in Blanka Guzi, Emma Meszaros and Rita Erdos.

Last year’s season-opener in Cairo (EGY) proved fertile ground for Independent Neutral Athletes and 2026 kicked off on the same note as Viktoria Sazonova (AIN) finished 1st in Qualification Group A with 1,414 points, alongside four compatriots, UIPM 2024 World Cup Budapest champion Mariya Gnedtchik (AIN) amongst them as she made a stellar return from injury.

Fourteen nations will be represented in the Semi-finals with veterans and newcomers among them. Last year’s UIPM U17 World Championships bronze medalist Tatiana Thomatos of South Africa was among those to qualify, a few weeks after her 16th birthday.
