The Executive Board (EB) of the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) has appointed a wide range of experts to serve on UIPM Commissions throughout the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic cycle.
Following the announcement of six Commission Chairs on January 31, seven Commissions have now been populated with a vibrant mix of former athletes, sports industry specialists, technical experts and historians with luminaries also coming from the worlds of politics, art, business and journalism.
Three female Olympic medallists are appointed, with Tokyo 2020 gold medallist Kate French of Great Britain joining London 2012 bronze medallist Yane Marques of Brazil on the UIPM Women’s Commission and Beijing 2008 bronze medallist Anastasiya Prokopenko of Belarus serving on the UIPM Culture & Education Commission.
Justinas Kinderis of Lithuania, 2013 men’s world champion, chairs the UIPM Sport For All Commission while Joshua Riker-Fox of Canada joins the UIPM Equipment Commission. Two more male Olympic pentathletes from Mexico team up on the UIPM Innovation Commission, with Ivar Sisniega continuing his leadership role and Horacio De La Vega now part of the panel.
Former UIPM 1st Vice President Sisniega (MEX) was until recently Secretary General of the Pan American Sports Organisation (PASO) and is now Executive President of the Mexican Football Federation. De La Vega (MEX), Executive President of the Mexican Baseball League, was a senior team world champion in 1998 and individual junior world champion in 1995.
Dr Klaus Schormann of Germany, who recently ended an unprecedented 31 years’ service as UIPM President, chairs the Culture & Education Commission with renowned artist Lori Norwood of United States among those appointed. Dr Schormann also joins the UIPM Pierre de Coubertin Commission, chaired by a distant relative of the founder of Modern Pentathlon, Alexandra de Navacelle de Coubertin of France.
Cristina Vasilianov, Vice President and former Secretary General of the Moldova National Olympic Committee, joins the UIPM Women’s Commission.
All Chairs will have the right to introduce additional experts to their Commission in an advisory capacity.
UIPM President Rob Stull OLY said: “I am thrilled that the Executive Board has approved the appointment of such an exciting group of people to serve on UIPM Commissions for the LA28 quad. Given our new ‘Athlete First’ mantra I’m particularly delighted to see so many former champions of our sport on the list.
“Our Commissions play a vital role in the development of our movement across many key areas, collaborating with and supporting the UIPM Team and complementing the strategic oversight of the Executive Board and elected Committees.
“Every single person appointed to one of these Commissions is going to add value and I challenge each of them to think innovatively with an open mind. I can’t wait to hear about their discussions and recommendations.”
