Hungary claim first gold at Worlds with victory in Men’s Relay

Modern Pentathlon

The most successful nation in the history of Modern Pentathlon at the Olympic Games finally had something to cheer about at these World Championships as Bence Demeter, Robert Kasza and Adam Marosi joined forces to win the Men’s 3-Team Member Relay in Taiwan.

Having started the combined event in 4th position, Demeter was precise with his shooting and his momentum have Kasza and Marosi the perfect platform with which to overtake the leaders to win in style. They had earlier taken fourth place in both the swim and fencing disciplines and looked like they had left themselves too much to do as they placed 11 out 17 teams in the ride.

The trio were however on fire in the run/shoot and once Kasza had got them in front after his second round at the range, no one was going to catch Marosi as he stormed through the course to claim gold.

China were almost as fast as Hungary in the final event, and after experiencing a sub-standard World Championships on their part of the world, they put to bed a difficult week by coming from 5th on the starting grid to win silver. Jinali Guo, Fulao Chen and London 2012 silver medallist Zhaohong Cai were also smiles on the podium.

It was bronze once again for Russia as Dmitry Lukach, Aleksander Lesun and Ilya Frolov kept their cool. Ukraine which had been leading coming into the combined saw their athletes struggle to find their aim and ended fourth whilst it was the same story for Great Britain as they ended their campaign in fifth.
