Modern Pentathlon
  • Khalil (EGY), Gulyas (HUN) and Seong (KOR) set to resume rivalry
  • Italy and France aim to continue season of men’s dominance
  • Alexandria (EGY) becomes first to host top 72 athletes in new format

The Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) has announced the 72 athletes from 23 countries across all six continents who will compete in the UIPM 2025 Pentathlon World Cup Final (July 4-6).

The line-up for the showpiece competition, held in Alexandria (EGY), includes Paris 2024 Olympic champion Michelle Gulyas of Hungary, as well as Olympic bronze medallists Seungmin Seong of Korea and Giorgio Malan of Italy.

It has already been a monumental season for Modern Pentathlon with the integration of Obstacle at senior level and the introduction of a compelling new Fencing format. Farida Khalil of Egypt has emerged as a serious contender in the new format at the age of 14, and she will be reunited with Gulyas (HUN) on Egyptian soil as athletes aim to clinch the first major title of the new era.

Apart from world champion Seong (KOR) and Malak Ismail (EGY), the main challenge is likely to come from the European trinity of Hungary, Italy and France, on the evidence of the Pentathlon World Cups that took place in Cairo (EGY), Budapest (HUN) and Pazardzhik (BUL).

On the men’s side, all three athletes who won gold medals in those competitions will be in Alexandria (EGY), with Matteo Cicinelli (ITA) continuing his intense rivalry with team-mate Malan (ITA), and Moutaz Mohamed (EGY) leading the hopes of the host nation along with emerging team-mates Mohamed El Ashqar (EGY) and Mohamed Hassan (EGY).

In the wake of a home Olympics, France have been very strong all season and medals for Ugo Fleurot (FRA) and Valentin Belaud (FRA) enabled both of those athletes to rank in the overall top four alongside Jean-Baptiste Mourcia (FRA).

UIPM President Rob Stull OLY said: “Pentathletes are the most versatile athletes in the world and there is no doubt we have seen their adaptability tested this season – with stunning results.

“With a new format providing a fascinating new competitive energy, the racing has been compelling and it has been great to see a new generation of contenders coming up against established stars of our sport. We can expect to see more history made by these incredible athletes during one of our showpiece competitions – the UIPM Pentathlon World Cup Final.”

The UIPM 2025 Pentathlon World Cup Final, held at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, will start with Women’s Semi-finals on July 4, followed by Men’s Semi-finals on July 5 and culminating with Finals on July 6.
