UIPM News

The golden sands and azure waters of Sattahip, Thailand may normally be a hotspot for seekers of rest and relaxation. In recent weeks however it became a hive of activity and education with an important UIPM Judges Certification Programme (JCP) course taking place.

The course had a hybrid approach with both online theory and in-person learning and practice on the ground in Sattahip, situated south of the capital city, Bangkok. The 35 students completed the virtual part of the course from August 13 to September 3 before gathering in person for five productive days from September 9-13.

The cohort dug into all three levels of the JCP, with courses focusing on Obstacle, Swimming, Laser Run, Biathle and Triathle. The participants, expertly overseen by UIPM JCP educator Rui Lucena (POR), came from Thailand and Philippines with six women and 30 men taking part.

With the 33rd edition of the SEA Games taking place across locations in Thailand later this year, the course was particularly timely, equipping and upskilling a large group of eager judges for the competition, which runs from December 9-20. Obstacle Laser Run, Laser Run and Triathle racing will take place in Chonburi (THA).

Asian Modern Pentathlon Confederation (AMPC) Secretary General, Sangkeong Yeo, said: “We know that Southeast Asia has been an area of exciting growth for our sports and the 33rd SEA Games is a great opportunity to further show the energy and excitement they bring.

“It is very exciting to have so many judges in Thailand and neighbouring nations continuing their development. We thank UIPM and their team of educators for their constant support.”

UIPM JCP educator Rui Lucena (POR) said: “We were really lucky to welcome a wide and diligent group of students in Sattahip. Everybody involved was eager to begin or continue their journey as UIPM judges, working on their skills and all aspects of our exciting sports.

“I thank them for their focus and dedication and hope the upcoming SEA Games becomes a wonderful experience for all of them.”
