World’s most versatile teenage athletes go for glory in Prague

Tetrathlon

It’s a big week for the Modern Pentathlon heroes of tomorrow as they battle for prizes at the UIPM Under 19 World Championships from July 18-24.

The world’s most versatile teenage athletes are on course to make their Olympic debuts at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games and the same Tetrathlon format (Swimming/Fencing/Laser-Run) will be replicated in Prague during this Under-19 competition, formerly known as the Youth A World Championships.

In 2016 in Limerick (IRL) the seven gold medals were split between Italy, Korea and Russia as Aurora Tognetti (ITA) and Jeong Youngjin (KOR) took home the individual titles.

The 2017 Under 19 World Championships schedule is as follows:

·        Tuesday July 18: Women’s Relay

·        Wednesday July 19: Men’s Relay

·        Thursday July 20: Women’s Qualification

·        Friday July 21: Men’s Qualification

·        Saturday July 22: Women’s Final

·        Sunday July 23: Men’s Final

·        Monday July 24: Mixed Relay

Swimming takes place at the Pod Juliskou Sports Centre with all other events held at the Juliska Sports Centre.

UIPM President Dr Klaus Schormann said: “This historic capital city has been a destination for flagship UIPM competitions for more than 50 years, most recently in 2016 when Prague staged a successful Masters World Championship.

“This week we are very much concentrating on the pentathletes of the future, who are aiming to achieve high performance on the way to the third Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in 2018.

“Our youth is the future of our sport and it needs as much support as possible from national federations and governments.

“I wish all of the athletes good fortune and urge them to compete in a spirit of friendship, respect and fairness in the spirit of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, founder of our multi-sport Olympic movement.”
