Aya Medany (EGY) elected to IOC Athletes Commission

Aya Medany of Egypt has become the first Modern Pentathlete to be appointed by the IOC President to the Athletes’ Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The three-time Olympian, who was the youngest pentathlete at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games when she made her Olympic debut aged 15, has been notified of her election two months after the formation of a new Commission during the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro on August 18.

Angela Ruggiero (USA) took over from Claudia Bokel (GER) as the new chair of the Commission, which was created in 1981 and exists to ensure that athletes’ views remain at the heart of the Olympic Movement decisions taken by the IOC executive.

Ms Medany, 27, retired in 2013 as one of Africa’s greatest pentathletes, having won four women’s individual gold medals at the African Championships, silver at the 2008 World Championships in Budapest (HUN) and numerous World Cup medals.
