UIPM 2023 U19 World Championships: Fencing Ranking Round

The UIPM 2023 U19 World Championships continued today as the Fencing Ranking Round kicked off the Women’s and Men’s Individual Finals in Istanbul (TUR).

Quinn Schulz of Canada and Hanseo Cho of Korea went toe-to-toe for the most impressive performers from either gender, as both Men’s finalists notched up an impressive 27 victories with just eight defeats to take an early 10-point lead at the top of the field. Leading the chasing pack once Super Saturday kicks off in the Turkish capital will be Zalan Jasso of Hungary who tallied 25V/10D. His compatriot Atilla Marschall (HUN) was on form too with 23V/12D with Etienne Clergeau of France also enjoying a solid start, on the same 23V/12D tally. 

On the women’s side, Malak Ismail of Egypt, one of the highly-rated talents in a stacked Final got her challenge off to a stellar start by jumping out in from thanks to 26 victories and just 9 defeats in the Fencing Ranking Round. That was enough to give the world No.22 a 10-point lead on Coline Flavin of France who had 25V/10D with Teresa Gioia of Italy third of the 36 finalists with her final tally of 24V/11D. 

The UIPM 2023 U19 World Championships reaches a climax on Saturday, July 29 as the first U19 world champions in the new Modern Pentathlon are confirmed. The Mixed Relay then closes the competition in Istanbul (TUR) on Sunday July 30.
