UIPM 2023 U19 World Championships: Women’s Qualification

The exciting action at UIPM 2023 U19 World Championships continued today with athletes taking part in the Women’s Individual Qualification in Istanbul (TUR).

The 18 best performers across two qualification groups earned passage to Saturday’s Women’s Final. The first group witnessed a compelling duel between compatriots Sumin Shin and Nayeon Kim of Korea who finished first and second respectively with 1,326 and 1,316 points. Emma Meszaros of Hungary was third closely followed by Josefine Unterberger of GermanyAlmira Belemir Dede ensured host nation Turkey will be represented as she safely qualified too. 

The second group was just as competitive with Katarzyna Debska of Poland finishing first with a total of 1,306 points, a tally that was matched by the talented Blanka Bauer of Hungary and Vivienne Meyer of Switzerland.  

Following on from the recent UIPM 2023 U17 World Championships in Alexandria (EGY), the competition in Turkey’s capital this week is the first time ever that a global cohort of female U19 athletes have taken part in an individual Pentathlon, which now comprises Fencing followed by Obstacle, Swimming and Laser Run. There were a number of impressive Obstacle performers on Thursday with Alexandra Fernandes of Czech Republic finishing in 0:34.59 and Egypt’s Farida Khalil not far behind in 0:35.53.

The UIPM 2023 U19 World Championships runs from July 25-30, continuing on Friday, July 28 with the 36 female finalists and 36 male athletes taking part in the Fencing Ranking Round before completing the Individual Finals the next day. The Mixed Relay closes the competition on Sunday July 30.
