Germany's Zillekens wins Zbigniew Majewski Memorial in Drzonków
2013 Youth A World Champion Christian Zillekens from Germany confirmed his status as one of the fledgling young talents in Europe after he took gold at the Zbigniew Majewski Memorial in Poland this weekend. The competition, held in Drzonków, also saw Lithuania's Emilija Serapinaite take the women's title. The National Ranking Competition in triathle was also held in parallel.
Zillekens got his campaign off to a winning start with victory on the fence, claiming 27 victories on the pistes as four athletes tied for second place with 26 bouts won. Dmitriy Koshelnik, Valerio Graselli, Pavel Kotkov and Szymon Staśkiewicz had one victory less than Zillekens.
In swimming, a blistering time of 1:59.18 was recorded by Remigiusz Golis as second place went to Sebastian Stasiak. Vladislav Sukharev was third in the water as Zillekens remained in the lead in the overall classification with Tullio De Santis in the provisional silver medal position and Stasiak moving up to third.
The combined was held before the equestrian and the fastest in the run/shoot was Łukasz Klekot who moved up to fourth overall with Zillekens still ahead on points. Stasiak went into second place after De Santis struggled at the range. Italy's Francesco Giancamilli was now in provisional third place with just one discipline to go.
On the riding course, the pressure was kept on Zillekens with four athletes achieving the maximum score 300 points, amongst them Łukasz Klekot, but the German had done enough to claim the title. Klekot took silver and Stasiak bronze to cap off of quality competition in Drzonkow. Men's Results
In the women's draw, it was Emilija Serapinaite from Lithuania who took home the trophy after she came second in the fence, recorded the fastest time in the swim and the third quickest in the combined before holding her nerve in the show jumping to win.
The first discipline had seen Ismena Dobrosielska take the lead in the standing after 28 victories on the fencing pistes. Alina Kubratskaya came third behind Serapinaite.
The Lithuanian was in inspired mood, coming first in the water in a time of 2:13.85 to move ahead on the leaderboard. Her twin sister Ieva was second quickest in the pool whilst Olga Boiko was third.
As with the men, the combined took place before the ride. And it was another Lithuanian who dominated as Aurelija Tamasauskaite was fastest in the run/shoot event and moved up to second overall just ahead of Anna Maliszewska.
Emilija Serapinaite had done enough in the first three events to ensure than even with 14 penalty points in the ride she took gold. Marta Kobecka and Paula Markowska both had perfect scores with the horse however in the overall classification it was Anna Maliszewska who came second with Darya Khalzova ending her campaign with the bronze medal.
