With 38 Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualification places still up for grabs, a high-quality field assembled in Drzonkow (POL) for the International Polish Open from September 12-15.

In the women’s competition on September 14, Janine Kohlmann of Germany claimed gold and maximum Olympic ranking points with a convincing victory, winning by 29sec from silver medallist Alessandra Frezza of Italy. Local favourite Anna Maliszewska of Poland finished a further 4sec behind and picked up bronze having starte.

The men’s entry of 38 demanded a qualification round, and when the final came on September 15 it was similar to the women’s event as one athlete stood out.

Ilya Shugarov of Russia took a large lead into the Laser Run and eased to victory with an intense battle for the medals taking place behind him.

To the delight of home supporters, Sebastian Stasiak (POL) won silver by 4sec from bronze medallist Ondrej Polivka of Czech Republic having started the Laser Run in 16th place, with Daniele Colasanti (ITA) and David Kindl (CZE) in close pursuit.

Janusz Peciak, UIPM Executive Board Member for Sport and Technical Committee Chairman, said: “This was a very well organized competition. There were judges from Japan, Czech Republic, Italy, Russia and Poland and the most important thing was that athletes and coaches had great conditions in which to participate.

“We had athletes from 24 countries across all continents and many countries that have been not very active before in Pentathlon, like New Zealand, Belgium and Kyrgyzstan. Also Turkish athletes are getting better and better.”
