UIPM 2015 Junior World Championships: Great Britain wins the Junior Women's Relay

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO - Francesca Summers and Eilidh Prise (GBR) are the new Women's Relay champions at the UIPM 2015 Junior World Championships in Mexico City.

In another dramatic finish, the British Team came from the 4th place to beat the Russian Team in the last meters of the combined event, here in Mexico City.

The new Junior Women's Relay World Champions were delighted with the end of this day: Prise said: "I'm really happy with this result. In the beginning of the combined event I was angry with my riding where I had two knockdowns and I knew that I would recover the 22 seconds gap I had. "I would like to thank everyone that helped me this year. Specially to the University of Bath, my coaches and my fantastic teammate. Their help was essencial to help me become a World Champion."

The Women's Individual Junior World Champion and now also Women's Relay Junior World Champion Francesca Summers said: "Today was a very hard competition. I'm still feeling tired for the Women's Individual Competition but I felt that I couldn't let my teammate down and we made it".

She added: "I never thought I could get these two titles. I came here to do my best but I'm really happy that I achieved this and also would like to thank everyone that helped me during this journey".

Second place went to Ekaterina Makarova and Uliana Batashova of Russia with Hungarians Karolina Palkovics and Rebeka Ormandi taking third.

c2dd0031-5a4f-4037-ae17-976dc008fd07The Russian duo Ekaterina Makarova and Uliana Batashova (RUS) got off to a good start with victory in the pool with a swim of 2:05.30.

Julie Belhamri and Pulcherie Delhalle (FRA) took second while the Koreans Kim Sunwoo and Kim Sehee clinched the third. Summers and Prise (GBR) took their form into the Fencing where they won 27 matches to take first place in the event and in the overall classification with 3 points ahead of the Russian Team.

Likewise, the Russian's duo came second in the Fencing to go second overall while the French's sat third.

On to the Riding Arena was the Hungarian pair Karolina Palkovics and Rebeka Ormandi who came out on top followed by the Americans Drusilla Corbett and Rachel Coleman.

Despite the sixth place on the Riding Arena, the Russians took the overall leaderboard with 7 second head start over the Hungarian duo and 16 and 22 seconds ahead of the Italians and British rivals heading in to the final Combined Event.

The fantastic Combined Event played out since the beginning with the Russians trying to keep the lead but a fantastic shooting and running of Prise lead the British team to the first place before the final relay.

Francesca Summers kept the distance and left the last shooting in the first place followed by the Russian Batashova. During the 800m, the Russian manage to take the first place but with a fantastic last effort, Summers recovered the first place and won her 2nd title in this Junior World Championships.

"We had a lot of excitement during this days with a fantastic performance from this Junior Pentathletes and we really expect to have more countries in the future in this kind of events."
