UIPM 2026 Pentathlon World Cup Final: Jurt (SUI) storms to breakthrough win in Budapest (HUN)

Modern Pentathlon

Anna Jurt of Switzerland held her nerve with an ice-cold Laser Run display to earn the prestigious title of UIPM 2026 Pentathlon World Cup Final champion in Budapest (HUN).

The 2024 European medalist pulled out the biggest performance of her career to surge from 4th to 1st in Laser Run, recording a total of 1493 points for her first-ever podium on the Pentathlon World Cup circuit.

It allowed the 24-year-old to edge out Viyaleta Hureyeva of Belarus by just 5sec with Laura Heredia of Spain claiming a second consecutive bronze ahead of local favourite Blanka Guzi of Hungary whose career-best season – with two gold medals and a silver – ended on the extended podium alongside Lucie Hlavackova of Czechia and Paris 2024 Olympic bronze medallist Seungmin Seong of Korea.

Fencing

Hlavackova (CZE) took full advantage as the seedings were overturned in the opening Fencing found to claim maximum points and the early initiative in the Final.

With six of the top eight seeds crashing out in the Top 16 including Jurt (SUI), and Guzi (HUN) not even making it that far, the Czech bronze medalist from Pentathlon World Cup Cairo eased to a 5-1 victory over Hureyeva (BLR).

It finished an impressive run that saw the Belarussian progress to the decider with a 5-2 defeat of top-seeded Ilke Ozyuksel of Türkiye with 19 seconds to spare in their Top 4 fight.

That came after Hlavackova (CZE) recorded a 4-2 Top 4 win over compatriot Karolina Krenkova (CZE), who was promoted into the Final following the withdrawal of Emma Meszaros (HUN).

Obstacle

Jana Attia of Egypt skipped through the overhead obstacles and onto the quickest time of the Obstacle course of 28.05sec to move her up to 4th in the standings. Top spot was claimed by Hureyeva (BLR), who edged ahead of Hlavackova (CZE) with a time of 30.6sec that took her total to 603 points.

However, Ozyuksel (TUR) fell off just prior to exiting the Ascension Bars to leave the Pentathlon World Cup Pazardzhik winner in 16th and with a mountain to climb.

Swimming

A strong 100m freestyle swim from Paula Valencia of Guatemala to win Heat 2 in 1:00.59 vaulted her into medal contention, with Guzi (HUN) also staying in contention. It was Anastasiya Malashenoka (BLR) who recorded the quickest time of 1:00.34 that accelerated her a full length clear in Heat 1.

Attia (EGY) nailed a speedy mark of 1:02.45 to win Heat 3, elevating her into third place in the points standings, seeing off Hureyeva (BLR) and Hlavackova (CZE) who were separated by just 0.09sec in 2nd and 3rd.

It gave Hereyeva (BLR) a total of 890 points and an 8sec handicap advantage over her Czech challenger heading into the Laser Run, with the rest of the field over 20sec adrift with Attia (EGY) and Jurt (SUI) positioned 3rd and 4th.

Laser Run

In what became a two-way fight for gold on the final lap of the 600m Laser Run course, Jurt saved her best to last with a charge to the top step of the podium.

Hlavackova (CZE) lost significant time with a struggle on her opening shot, allowing Hureyeva (BLR) to extend her advantage to over 26sec, but the Belarussian’s cushion was dramatically slashed as she too toiled on the range on her second visit.

That reignited the fight for prizes, with Jurt (SUI) remaining clear of the surging Heredia (ESP) and then eventually overtaking Hlavackova (CZE) at the 1500m mark to move into 2nd.

As the starting leader’s cushion was gradually erased, the front two left the shooting range for the last time almost side by side but Jurt (SUI), owner of the Laser Run Olympic record from the Paris 2024 Games, quickly charged into the lead and seized control to break the tape as the new champion.

A few seconds behind, Hureyeva (BLR) took he country’s first international medal since its re-admission to international competition earlier this year.

Heredia (ESP) cemented bronze while Guzi (HUN) produced a late charge to take 4th on home soil with a tiring Hlavackova (CZE) pushed back into 5th.
