UIPM President Dr Klaus Schormann attended the 3rd Youth Olympic Winter Games, where he also took part in the 135th IOC Session on January 10.

The Winter Youth Olympic Games 2024 was awarded to Gangwon (CHN), three new IOC Members were announced – David Haggerty (USA), Gianni Infantino (SUI) and Yarushiro Yamashita (JPN) – and there were updates on the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, anti-doping activities and the IOC Ethics Commission chaired by former United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon. IOC President Dr Thomas Bach underlined the importance of solidarity and political neutrality in a speech.

During his stay in Lausanne President Dr Schormann met with IOC Members, NOC Presidents and IF colleagues to discuss general matters linked to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic season.

On January 12, the UIPM President met with 1st Vice President (and IOC Vice President) Juan Antonio Samaranch to discuss the development of Modern Pentathlon and the innovative steps proposed for a new presentation of Modern Pentathlon at the Olympic Summer Games Paris 2024. Later they attended some indoor competitions of the Youth Olympic Winter Games.

In Les Tuffes (SUI) on January 15, during the Biathlon Mixed Relay, Dr Schormann met with International Biathlon Union President Olle Dahlin and Greece NOC President and IOC Member Spyros Capralos. They discussed the importance of the Youth Olympic Winter Games as a dynamic process for future Olympic Winter Games and talked about issues of environment and climate.

On January 23 the UIPM President shared ideas about future school projects, sport cultural presentations, curriculum development, sport management and business with Prof Dr Bonnie Tiell from the Tiffin University in Alabama (USA).

The two organisations signed a memorandum of understanding in July 2019 about a future bilateral partnership.

On January 24 and 25 the UIPM President chaired a series of key meetings of UIPM elected decision-makers relating to the future presentation of Modern Pentathlon and Tetrathlon, among other matters.

For the third year in succession, there was a joint meeting of the UIPM Athletes, Coaches and Technical Committees. The ad-hoc New Pentathlon Working Group and New Tetrathlon YOG 2022 Working Groups also met and established recommendations to present to the UIPM Executive Board.

UIPM President Dr Klaus Schormann chaired a historic two-day UIPM Executive Board meeting – the first to take place at the new IOC Headquarters, Olympic House.

On the first day of the meeting, IOC President Dr Bach, Vice-President Juan Antonio Samaranch, Director General Christophe de Kepper and Sport Director Kit McConnell all addressed the EB.

The EB voted unanimously to approve proposals from the New Pentathlon and New Tetrathlon YOG 2022 Working Groups designed to improve the presentation of the two UIPM Sports at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and Dakar 2022 Youth Olympic Games respectively.

The EB also made decisions relating to new member applications and future competitions and received a range of presentations and updates.

UIPM President Dr Klaus Schormann, who will attend his 20th Olympic Games as an official in Tokyo in 2020, also joined the fellow EB Members who are members of the World Olympians Association (WOA) to sign a special wall within the IOC Headquarters.

The Olympians on the EB are Andrejus Zadneprovskis, (LTU - 1996, 2000, 2004 bronze 2008 silver); Jorge Salas (ARG - 1980 in biathlon); Aya Medany (EGY - 2004, 2008, 2012); WOA President Joel Bouzou (FRA - 1980, 1984 team bronze, 1988, 1992; Kitty Chiller (AUS - 2000); Janusz Peciak (POL - 1972, 1976 gold, 1980); Dmitry Svatkovsky (RUS - 1992 team silver, 1996, 2000 gold); Rob Stull (USA - 1988, 1992).
