13.01.2022: 5th Discipline Working Group UIPM President Dr Klaus Schormann chaired the historic first meeting of the 21-strong working group assembled to determine the future of Modern Pentathlon through a new fifth discipline, which will replace Riding after the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. It was a hugely productive meeting with an exchange of views from a wide variety of relevant stakeholders, bringing together all available internal and external expertise. The group will now work remotely until the first physical meeting, scheduled for April.

17.01.2022: Prof Dr Holger Preuss President Dr Schormann met online with UIPM Innovation Commission Member Prof Dr Holger Preuss for discussions about actions in the Innovation Commission and education. They discussed academic partnerships through universities across all continents that can benefit all athletes and UIPM Sports society.

19.01.2022: UIPM Executive Board The UIPM President, together with Secretary General Shiny Fang, briefed all Executive Board (EB) Members about some of the key actions around the 2022 season. Key issues on the agenda included the new Modern Pentathlon competition format designed for Paris 2024, working group discussions around the new 5th Discipline designed for Los Angeles 2028, development matters and the importance of involving athletes in future processes. The EB confirmed the award of future competitions to Bath (GBR), Ankara (TUR) and Bali (INA).

24.01.2022: Para Pentathlon Commission Dr Schormann attended the first online meeting of the new UIPM Para Pentathlon Commission, chaired by Andrew Collings (NZL). Members of the group were introduced to each other, discussed the purpose of the Commission, set individual targets for the next 12 months and established future plans and tasks, including a second meeting that took place in February 2022. UIPM has been a member of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) since 2014 and has set a strategicgoal of increasing the offer of para-sport opportunities to athletes with varying disabilities, beyond the successful initial establishment of Para Laser Run.

24.01.2022: Dr Michael Borchmann President Dr Schormann and UIPM Executive Assistant Lena Nussbaumer met in Frankfurt-am-Main with Dr Michael Borchmann to discuss international sport in China as well as business matters based on UIPM’s longtime partnership with Chinese society. Dr Borchmann is adviser for the China International Investment Promotion Agency at the Ministry of Commerce for the People’s Republic of China.

29.01.2022: DVMF General Assembly As Honorary President of the German Modern Pentathlon Federation (DVMF), Dr Schormann attended the Extraordinary General Assembly which elected a new President. Dr Michael Doerr is a former world class pentathlete and national trainer of the Germany women’s team. The General Assembly also featured the election of Vice President Jan Veder, Athletes Chair Patrick Dogue and Media Officer Robin Schmidt, as well as the re-election of Maike Schramm (Development Member), Pierre Jander (Youth) and Sebastian Dietz (Vice President of Finance). Former DVMF President Michael Scharf became an Honorary Member. President Dr Schormann briefed the Assembly on recent actions and decisions taken by UIPM and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and gave an update on the action plan for the 5th Discipline consultation.

01.02.2022: Marketing meeting Dr Schormann and Ms Nussbaumer met in Frankfurt-am-Main with Prof Dr Nicole and Prof Dr Markus Mau to discuss future marketing steps and promotion of all UIPM Sports within the development pyramid. The Maus are external marketing consultants who have offered to help and assist UIPM in the actions of the Union wherever needed.

04.02.2022: UIPM Medical Commission President Dr Schormann attended the first meeting of the new UIPM Medical Commission, chaired by Natalja Ofitserova (BLR). UIPM Secretary General Shiny Fang gave an operational briefing and the Commission discussed topics such as anti-doping activities, including an evaluation of current test distribution plans, UIPM’s anti-doping education plan and policy for gathering intelligence. Commission Members discussed matters relating to the new Modern Pentathlon format and the mental health and wellbeing of athletes. Dr Ofitserova mapped out the main direction of activities for the Medical Commission from 2022 to 2024.

04.02.2022: University lecture The UIPM President provided an online lecture for students of Tiffin University in Ohio (USA). Dr Schormann covered the following topics: • UIPM Leadership • Modernising Modern Pentathlon • Digital Transformation • Politics and the Olympic Games • Global Communication and Influence. Dr Liston Bochette III PhD, President of the Modern Pentathlon Federation of Puerto Rico and Deputy Mayor of Fort Myers, also contributed to the seminar.

14.02.-16.02.2022: UIPM President visited UIPM Headquarters and briefed staff members about key actions to follow in the 2022 season. Dr Schormann had numerous meetings with all departments including Communications and Development. He also joined the first meeting of the inaugural UIPM Women’s Commission and announced that UIPM will celebrate the 50th anniversary of women in Modern Pentathlon in August 2022 in Munich (GER).

The meeting with UIPM Marketing Manager Alexandre Mauran focused on an overall review of the past two years, covering every sector including social media, TV, and esports, as well as a discussion on future marketing strategy, the impact of successful marketing for the UIPM Sports movement and how the Union can profit from its actions. On behalf of the Communications department Mr Mauran presented on work areas for 2022-24 including the TV product and viewer experience, branding consistency and improvement (especially with regard to the new format), better athlete visibility through UIPM Uniform Guidelines, and new directions in digital and social media and esports.

President Dr Schormann, Secretary General Fang and Executive Board Member for Development Dr Viacheslav Malishev were briefed on February 15 by UIPM Development Manager Maxime Papillon. The meeting included a general overview of how steps taken by UIPM in various countries are developing based on the resources and different capacity across the five continents. There is now a key focus on the Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026 – the first Olympic Games to take place on the continent of Africa. Special actions that can benefit new federations, such as administrative support through coaches, were discussed.

19.02.2022: 139th IOC Session The UIPM President followed the IOC Session online. The Session included reports from IOC President Dr Thomas Bach and UIPM 1st Vice President Juan Antonio Samaranch (above) in his capacity as Chairman of the Coordination Commission of the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022. Mr Samaranch explained that the Games in Beijing were the first totally environmentally-friendly Olympic Games. The IOC Session elected Juan Antonio Samaranch as IOC Vice President.

20.02.2022: UIPM Pentathlon World Championships As a regular host of high-quality global UIPM competitions, Egypt has become a contender to host the UIPM 2022 Pentathlon World Championships after the competition had to be relocated at short notice. The UIPM President had an open discussion about this possibility with Egypt’s Minister of Youth and Sport, Dr Ashraf Sobhy. They discussed the requirements of the competition including aspects relating to the new Modern Pentathlon format that will be launched in 2022 ahead of Paris 2024. The EB of the Egyptian Modern Pentathlon Federation (EMPF) including EMPF President (and new UIPM Vice President) Sharif Elerian joined themeeting to discuss the various venue options.

22.-23.02.2022: On February 22 the UIPM President met with the Italian Modern Pentathlon Federation (FIPM) to discuss the UIPM 2022 Youth World Championships in Lignano (ITA) in September and future opportunities to host additional UIPM competitions in Italy. Furthermore, Dr Schormann raised the topic of development areas (Biathle/ Triathle and Laser Run) in Italy and discussed ways to increase the number of young athletes participating in the coming years. The FIPM is also supporting an exciting multi-sports competition with the FISU 2024 University World Championships heading to Rome (ITA). As a symbol of the close partnership in the coming years, Dr Schormann handed over a small gift to FIPM President Fabrizio Bittner.

In the afternoon the UIPM President met with Prof Fabio Pigozzi at the Foro Italico University of Rome and Prof Pigozzi handed over a University plaque as a symbol of long-term partnership. Dr Schormann and Prof Pigozzi discussed the latest COVID-19 situation and how the sport is facing the difficulties of being unable to host competitions in Asia. Furthermore, Prof Pigozzi raised the importance of medical support for athletes during training and competitions during the pandemic, with a permanent exchange of medical knowledge needed. The meeting with Prof Pigozzi, who is a UIPM Honorary Member, underlined the importance of close partnership between the sporting and academic world — the cornerstone of UIPM’s support for all Modern Pentathlon activities under the banner of FISU.

On February 23 President Dr Schormann and President Bittner, along with FIPM Secretary General Filippo De Liguori, met with Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) President Dr Giovanni Malago in Rome. They discussed further steps to hold more Modern Pentathlon competitions in future in Italy – including development sports Laser Run, Biathle, Triathle and Tetrathlon. President Dr Malago also spoke about the current situation of Modern Pentathlon in relation to the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 and Dr Schormann gave a short briefing around the New 5th Discipline Working Group and all steps UIPM is taking to ensure the success of this consultation process ahead of the next UIPM Congress in Antigua (GUA) in November 2022. Italian sport stays close to UIPM based on their long history in Modern Pentathlon.

25.02.-27.02.2022: UIPM Technical Committee From February 25-27 UIPM held its first Technical Committee meeting with the newly elected and appointed members, many of whom attended in person despite the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions on global travel. Dr Schormann awarded Certificates of Achievement to Technical Committee Members Agnes Kulcsar (HUN), Agnese Tomassi (BEL), Ali Assem (EGY), Ana Ruth Orellana (GUA), Andrea Dell’Amore (ITA), Edyta Maloszyc (POL), Rui Lucena (POR) and Dr Vladimir Miller (SVK). Agnese Tomassi received an award for her role as Technical Official in the 2020 UTS Virtual Youth Festival, which also featuring a number of youth pentathletes. She received a gift from UIPM sponsor RAM Swiss Watches.

28.02.2022: Conflict in Ukraine - IOC President Dr Bach briefed all International Federations on the latest situation in Ukraine after the publication of an official statement. The UIPM EB held an extraordinary meeting the same day to decide how to interpret and act upon the IOC guidance in handling the situation, with particular regard to the role of Russia and Belarus.

01.03.2022: 5th Discipline Working Group UIPM President Dr Klaus Schormann, Vice President Joel Bouzou and Secretary General Shiny Fang joined members of the UIPM Athletes Committee and external media and marketing experts who are all part of the UIPM 5th Discipline Working Group for a dedicated meeting about the future presentation of Modern Pentathlon. The group discussed proposals from UIPM stakeholders for the 5th Discipline that will be part of the sport after Paris 2024. The working group is composed of 21 people with fully 10 Olympic pentathletes bringing their expertise to the matter. The athlete community is represented by James Cooke (GBR), Natalya Coyle (IRE), Yasser Hefny (EGY) and Valentin Prades (FRA).

Upcoming events
