UIPM 2025 Pentathlon World Championships: Shaban (EGY) impresses in Men’s Qualification
Mohanad Shaban of Egypt led the way on the first day of the UIPM 2025 Pentathlon World Championships with the highest score during Men’s Qualification.
Shaban (EGY), Paris 2024 Olympian and UIPM 2023 Pentathlon World Cup Final winner, racked up an impressive 1,552 points as he dominated Group B, with team-mate Omar Amer (EGY) finishing 2nd ahead of Yuriy Kovalchuk of Ukraine.
Earlier, the hopes of the host nation had been enriched by the performance of Jonas Kalaminskas of Lithuania in topping Group A with 1,511 points, the local favourite finishing 1sec ahead of Valentin Belaud of France, Juan Ochoa of Guatemala and Giorgio Malan of Italy.
The Obstacle discipline in Group B was dominated by United States duo Kian O’Boyle and Luke Filar, but neither was able to qualify for the Semi-finals.
Group C ended with another Egyptian, Mohamed El Ashqar (EGY), crossing first with 1,547 points having set a new Obstacle world record of 21:16sec. Matej Lukes of Czechia was 8sec behind him on the finish line, just ahead of Mohamed Hassan (EGY).
With each National Federation permitted a maximum of four athletes in the Semi-finals, Egypt selected Moutaz Mohamed (EGY), Shaban (EGY), El Ashqar (EGY) and Hassan (EGY) to carry their hopes forward.
Reigning world champion Csaba Bohm and 2024 silver medallist Balasz Szep of Hungary were also among the successful qualifiers, helping their team overcome the disappointment of losing world No.2 Mihaly Koleszar (HUN) to sickness in the morning.
The UIPM 2025 Pentathlon World Championships takes place in Kaunas (LTU) from August 26-30, continuing with Women’s Qualification on August 27.
