A tree was planted in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan on October 21, 2016 in recognition of the first visit of UIPM President Dr Klaus Schormann and in memory of Modern Pentathlon's founder Baron Pierre de Coubertin. One of the most influential members of the Slovak Modern Pentathlon Association, Vladimir Cerny, passed away on October 30, 2016 at the age of 90.
Mr Cerny became an Olympian in Melbourne in 1956 when he competed for Czechoslovakia, which he also did at numerous World Championships.
He went on to be a senior administrator of the sport, first with the Czechoslovakian Modern Pentathlon Federation and, in 1968, when he was elected to the Executive Board of what was then UIPMB: the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne et Biathlon.
