After a successful Olympic year in 2016 we begin the Tokyo 2020 cycle with the first World Cup of the new 2017 season.
I welcome all athletes, coaches and team leaders, the local organizing team in Los Angeles-Fairplex, the spectators and honoured guests. I invite you to enjoy an exciting competition in the historic facility of Fairplex.
Fairplex is a wonderful environment for the hosting of quality events all year round, from sport to education, entertainment and multi-cultural events.
Let us celebrate our Olympic sport of Modern Pentathlon, which takes place in a spirit of fair play without any manipulation. Only a clean athlete can be proud of his or her result.
My thanks go to the US Modern Pentathlon Association, the US Olympic Committee and the Fairplex organizing committee, as well as our volunteers, sponsors and media whose contribution is hugely valuable. They make this important World Cup happen.
I know the athletes will be performing at the highest level as this will be the first step on a four-year competitive programme that leads all the way to the Olympic Summer Games 2020 in Tokyo.
I wish everybody a successful competition in this special venue close to Los Angeles where we have great memories.
This World Cup will mark a new milestone in California linked to the history of Modern Pentathlon, the sport created by Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the new Olympic Games.

The UIPM 2017 World Cup #1 is coming to Southern California at Fairplex featuring five disciplines (Swimming, Fencing, Riding, Shooting and Running) in one sport, Modern Pentathlon.
